Tally for Claude and ChatGPT lets an AI app read your own Tally (TallyPrime or Tally.ERP 9) through the IoTReady Tally Connector, a small program on the computer where Tally runs.
Prerequisites · Quick start · Security · Tools · Limits · Troubleshooting
Prerequisites
- Tally running on a Windows computer that stays on, with the company you want to share open.
- Tally's XML server turned on (F1 Help, Settings, Connectivity, act as server, port 9000).
- Permission to install a program on that computer. The connector needs no inbound ports, VPN or firewall changes.
- A way to sign in here: a Google or Microsoft account, or an email address or mobile number that can receive a six-digit code.
- The AI app: Claude (claude.ai) or ChatGPT, with the ability to add a connector.
Quick start
- In Claude, open Settings, Connectors, and add the Tally connector (server address
https://tally.iotready.app/mcp). In ChatGPT, add it as an app. - Sign in, then choose Link my Tally. You get a pairing code.
- Install the connector on the Tally computer and enter the code. Your account page then shows Connected with the company name.
- Allow the app. Then ask: "What is the status of my Tally connection?"
Security
- The connector connects out to Cloudflare; nothing connects in. Only this service can reach it, and the connector refuses anything else.
- It starts read-only. Recording a change needs two switches: Read and record changes on your account page, and write-back turned on at the computer that runs Tally (
tally-connector write-back on --yes). With either off, every change is refused. Nothing can be edited or deleted through it. - Every change carries a unique key, so a retry never records a voucher twice, and is written to a log on the Tally computer (key, time and outcome, no amounts or names) before it is sent.
- Your Tally data is passed straight to the AI app you allow and is not stored here. Logs hold no amounts, names or voucher numbers.
- Disconnect any time on your account page: the link is removed and the AI app loses access at once.
Tools
status: whether the connector is online and Tally is answering, the shared company and when the connector last reported.list_companies: the shared company.list_masters: stock items, stock groups, units, godowns or parties (customers and vendors).get_stock: closing quantity and value of each stock item, as of a date.list_vouchers: purchase orders, sales orders, delivery notes or receipt notes in a date range, with their stock lines.
Changes (need both switches above; each takes an idempotency_key, and repeating a call with the same key is always safe):
create_stock_adjustment: raise or lower one item's stock in one godown (a stock journal).create_stock_transfer: move a quantity of one item between two godowns (a stock journal).create_receipt_note: record goods received against an existing purchase order.create_delivery_note: record goods sent against an existing sales order.
Limits
- A change is one voucher; a note has at most 50 lines. Tally must have the items, godowns, party and order already.
- At most 1000 rows a call (200 by default); the answer says when it was cut short and how to read on.
- Stock is company-wide closing stock; per-godown stock is not available yet.
- Deleted vouchers are not reported. Vouchers of custom types are not included.
- An answer over a few megabytes, or a Tally call that takes over half a minute, is refused: ask for a smaller date range.
- 120 requests a minute per account. One Tally per account.
Troubleshooting
- "The Tally connector is offline": the Tally computer is off or asleep, or the connector is not running. Start it and check your account page.
- "Tally is not answering": start Tally and turn on its XML server on port 9000.
- "That company is not open in Tally": open the shared company in Tally.
- "Tally did not answer in time": Tally is busy or the request is large. Ask for a smaller date range or fewer rows.
- "This connection is read-only" or "Write-back is turned off": turn on the matching switch (account page, or
tally-connector write-back on --yeson the Tally computer, then restart the connector). - "The change may or may not have been applied": Tally did not answer clearly. Ask again with the same
idempotency_key; the connector will say what happened, and it never records one key twice. If it says the outcome is unknown, look for the voucher in Tally before trying a new key. - The pairing code is refused: it works once, for an hour. Get a new one on your account page.
- The AI says it is not connected: remove and add the connector again, then sign in.
